Character Name:
Ava Gallagher
Nickname(s):
Ava
Age
Eighteen
October 3
Gender:
Female
Field:
Trainer
Kind:
Human
Appearance:
Like her personality, Ava's appearance also speaks of a person who has her act together, even if she sometimes blends into the crowd. (After all, she's no eye-catching beauty.) She has red hair cut to the shoulder blades; long enough to be feminine but short enough to be practical. She has green eyes, but has troubles seeing, so she nearly always wears a pair of oval-shaped black glasses. She's not a fan of contacts, especially on the road, and thinks they can be too much work.
Ava is tall, standing at five feet, eleven inches. Unfortunately, tall does not always equal a model-like build. Though not fat, she is a little paunchy around the midsection, which makes her self-conscious occasionally, especially when wearing swimsuits. Her skin is a healthy pink, the skin of someone who doesn't spend too much time indoors but also doesn't spend all her times tanning in the sun. She's not particularly curvy, but not ruler-straight either.
For clothes, Ava prefers simple, practical things, like jeans, T-shirts, jackets, vests, tennis shoes. Because of the slight chubbiness mentioned earlier, she rarely swims in two-piece swimsuits. This works to her advantage anyways, as one-piece swimsuits allow her to swim faster. She doesn't like having her hair up, but instead chooses to keep it back with a headband of some sort, usually black.
Personality:
If asked to describe Ava in one word, most people would already know it: Likable. She manages to be friendly without being hyper and overbearing, calm and level-headed without being distant, and helpful to anyone that needs it. She always seems to have everything together, and is a "people person".
Ava is one of those people that's incredibly nice and helpful for seemingly no apparent reason. She is the type of person you would expect to find in a back alley giving meals to hobos who are spitting at her feet. She's not afraid to go up to someone she doesn't know that appears to be having a problem and say, "Hey, the name's Ava. Do you need any help?" Because of this, she's also been described as the "cool big sister" type.
Of course, going to help random people isn't always a good thing. Like many helpful people, she tends to put others before herself, and sometimes has trouble reaching her own goals because she was helping someone else.
Ava is also cheerful, trusting, and optimistic. She always tries to start each day with a positive outlook, thinking, "I get to challenge a Gym Leader today!" instead of, "I have to go challenge a Gym Leader today." She believes that everyone had a good side to them, and does her best to remember it, even with people she doesn't particularly like. Unfortunately, this, in combination with her desire to help people, can also get her into trouble. She can end up offering to help someone who would use her to harm someone else, or who is dangerous to her. Usually, her morals are pretty good, but they can be pushed to the side.
Ava, unfortunately, is what many would call a hopeless romantic. She almost always has some romance novel somewhere in her bag, and even thinks she might write one someday. On the other hand, when talking to someone she's interested in, she can't seem to come up with more than a stutter and a blush.
Growing up in Sootopolis, Ava grew to love swimming and diving. She swims whenever she can, and tries to stay near bodies of water. The ocean and lakes are just something that she is naturally drawn to.
On the other hand, one thing she can't stand is heights. Ever since falling off of a Pelipper as a little girl, she has been terrified of heights, to the point of freezing up and panicking. She avoids them at all costs, going by land or be sea, even if it means taking the long way around. The really long way around. She has yet to acknowledge this fear, and just claims to enjoy taking the scenic route, which isn't a total lie.
Yes, Ava Gallagher had a ways to go before she's really ready for the trials of living on her own as a trainer...
History:
Ava Gallagher was born on a breezy fall day in Sootopolis City. She was an only child. Like most children living in Sootopolis, she learned to swim at an early age. Often, she would get into contests with the other children to see who could swim across the lake in the center of town the fastest, or who could hold their breath underwater the longest. Sometimes she won, sometimes she lost; she was never any better or worse than the other children.
Of course, like all children, she was curious, and there was one thing that was always the center of curiosity in Sootopolis: The Cave of Origin. The other children of the city and herself would spend hours planning ways to get in, plotting how to get the old man to move, all so they could find out what was in this mysterious cave. Not that they ever got in. No, there was only one entrance into the cave, and the old man always had a clever way to distract them. More than once, he sent Ava off on an errand to help some resident of the city. Other residents saw her running errands, and asked her to help them too. In that way, she ended up as the unofficial "errand girl" of the city. She actually ended up liking doing things for people, partly because she got to learn other secrets about the city, and partly because she just enjoyed it. She never got into the Cave of Origins.
As she got older, people began to send her on slightly more difficult errands, ones that required her to be further away from the city. Once, she was sent out to Mossdeep City to ask about the museum. She had been lent a Pelipper to fly out there. On the way back, the Pelipper had been flying higher than usual, and a gust of wind knocked her off of it's back. For a few hundred feet she fell, terrified that the impact with the ocean would break her neck. However, the Pelipper was quick enough that it was able to dive down and catch her before she hit the water. Still, she has been terrified of heights ever since.
Like all children, her dreams hopped from one thing to the next for a while. At first, she wanted to help Nurse Joy at the Pokemon Center. Then, she wanted to sell medicinal herbs to trainers. Then, she wanted to brew healing items for the Pokemon Center. Finally, her dreams settled on becoming a pokemon trainer. After all, she loved pokemon, and she was surrounded by trainers. Her parents were trainers. There were quite a few trainers in Sootopolis. And, of course, it helped that the old man guarding the Cave of Origins said she might be let inside if she became strong enough.
However, there was one person that really caused her to want to be a trainer, and that was the Gym Leader Wallace. Often, she would find herself sneaking into the Gym just to see him battle against the trainers that came to challenge him. The power and grace of his pokemon! As far as she was concerned, nothing could be cooler than battling like that. In some ways, she even had a childhood crush on him, in the way that young girls have crushes on much older guys who they think are cool. Either way, she admired him greatly, even when he left to become Champion, and still admires him to this day.
It was also because of him that, for a while, she wanted to specialize in water-type pokemon. However, after seeing someone come in with a party full of electric types and beat every trainer in the gym with fairly little trouble, she began to understand that pokemon training was more than how amazing your pokemon looked, or how strong they were. There was a strategy to it. From then on, she read every book on pokemon she could find, trying to learn everything she could.
Finally, the time came for her to begin her pokemon journey. Wanting to become as strong as possible as fast as possible, she figured getting far away from home would help her grow as fast as possible. Finally, she settled on a region: Erinuki.
